Philippines: Boracay - The Friendly Island

Boracay Island is considered by many as one of the top-rated destination islands in all of Asia, and one of the primary reasons is the spectacular, powder white sand. For much of the day there is a continuous parade of international visitors strolling back and forth along four kilometer "white beach".

It's also struck us as being one of the happpiest places on Earth, and it seemed that practically everyone has a beaming smile. The local people that live here are extremely friendly, and everyone is in a good mood and enjoying the beauty of the sea, sand, and sun.

We based ourselves on White Beach, which has 3 "stations" or zones that are located at adjacent parts along the stretch. Our lovely accomodation was in the quieter Station 1. Station 2 is the party and action oriented area, and is filled with restaurants, bars with all-night music, a shopping strip on the sand, and is the most crowded with younger travelers. Station 3 is the budget end of the beach where the backpacker crowd can find cheaper lodging. Boracay has an allure that draws people from all over, but amazingly there's a relaxed and peaceful vibe permeating the scene.

Our days were spent taking long beach walks, and frolicking in the warm ocean - enjoying various water activities like paddle-boarding, seakayaking, beach frisbee, and a sunset sail.

We shopped, explored a local fish market, and lounged on shaded beach chairs.

The sunsets were dramatic and everyone came out to watch the spectacle - making the afternoon happy hour a warm-up to the evening's party scene.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here in Boracay, and would certainly put this island on our repeat list.
